Framing the Solution: Field Ingenuity at Farmington's Sports Pavilion

During the Farmington Country Club Sports Pavilion project, our team encountered a design challenge that required quick thinking and creativity. The ceiling was originally specified to use tongue–and–groove boards spanning eight feet, but the available materials were only six feet long. Installing them as designed would have required excessive cutting and piecing, resulting in wasted time and a less professional finish.

Recognizing this issue, carpenters Jeff Bednarczyk and Jay “J Bird” Krantz collaborated to find a better solution. They designed a “picture frame” border that visually framed the ceiling, allowing the six-foot boards to fit perfectly within the eight–foot span. This simple yet clever modification eliminated unnecessary joints, saved significant labor time, and maintained the high-quality standards expected at Farmington and by Martin Horn.

Once the new concept was developed, we contacted our safety supervisor, Pam Haney, to review the design and share it with the project manager and office team for approval. After review, the modification was officially approved, and the completed pavilion ceiling now looks seamless, professional, and beautifully finished.
