Henry “Shep” Shepherd | Truck Driver

Why did you choose a career as a Truck Driver?

I started my career in the construction business working for my dad. I was the oldest kid in the family, so I got nominated to drive the trucks. The more jobs I delivered for, the more I realized how much I enjoyed being a driver. Eventually, I stopped working on the field team and made deliveries full time. I liked that I could keep working in the construction industry doing what I love.

Why did you choose to work at Martin Horn?

My dad became an employee here and told me they had an opening for a driver. I had taken some time after my mother passed away and was ready to get back to work. The position ended up being a good fit and I take my job very seriously. I’ve been here for 12 years now and still love working here.

Is there someone you look to as a mentor? Someone who inspires you?

There is an elder at my church named James Carter. He’s a really great person who values honesty and positivity. I’ve never heard him speak a harsh word about anyone. He gives great advice and continues to be an important role model for me.

What is the best advice you can give to new drivers?

If you’re a new driver, find an experienced one and get to know how they drive. Real-world training is the best training. Every day is a learning experience and you have to treat it as such. Being a safe driver requires constant practice.
