National Truck Driver Appreciation Week – Terry Herring
Terry Herring | Truck Driver
Why did you choose a career as a Truck Driver?
I chose this career because I love the independence of it. I also enjoy figuring out the logistics of deliveries. Every day presents a new challenge and that’s what keeps my job interesting.
Why did you choose to work at Martin Horn?
I heard Martin Horn was a great company to work for. I met Shep and Troy Washington on the road some years ago and they both worked at Martin Horn. They both spoke highly of the company and talked about how it was family-oriented. I was very interested in learning more so I applied as a driver. I’ve been here for almost 3 years now.
Is there someone you look to as a mentor? Someone who inspires you?
Probably, Ted Horn, he’s a relatable businessman. As a CEO, he’s never felt unapproachable to me and I really appreciate that. He always makes an effort to understand his employees and I think that’s what makes him a good leader.
What is the best advice you can give to new drivers?
The most important advice I can give to a new driver is to stay focused. You never know when something might go wrong on the road, whether it’s a distracted driver, bad weather, wandering animals or roadway obstruction. I would also tell them it’s important to communicate with each other. If you see something on the road, say something.
