When a local family sought to restore Kenridge,
a beautiful historic property, they turned to
Martin Horn. Meeting historic preservation requirements
while constructing a home for 21st century living
posed numerous challenges. For example, a fireplace
was eliminated from the newly designed first-floor
kitchen, but the chimney had to remain visible
on the exterior, requiring a creative, hidden
bracing system. Carpenters reused original materials,
such as doors and hardwood floors, to maintain
the home's historic character. State-of-the-art
electrical and mechanical systems were seamlessly
integrated into the original structure. The Association
for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities recognized
Kenridge as an outstanding historic preservation
project.
