The home of Bob Headrick and Jeff Dreyfus appears so modern, few people realize it was built in the 1930s. Commissioned by a Charlottesville widow, Mrs. James A. Cole, Architect Kenneth Day designed the home in the International Style, newly prominent and at the time, and a strong departure from Jeffersonian style. Dreyfus, an architect, and Headrick, a realtor, worked with Martin Horn to complete much-needed renovations to update the house, known as the Cole House. “I’d worked with Martin Horn on a couple of complex projects including renovations of historic homes such as Social Hall and the Origami House, and I knew that was the team I wanted working on my own home.”

The project included adding three appendages to the house to add an entry, a master bedroom, a closet, a porch, and a half bath. The couple has maintained the streamlined, modern architecture originally intended, and has furnished the home with clutter-free, clean design and carefully chosen furniture to complement the overall look.

The house, purchased in 2002, underwent a first round of renovations in 2010 and was profiled in C’ville Weekly and was a popular feature on the Charlottesville Garden Tour that year.

In this round of renovations, all the windows and doors needed to be replaced, and there was an extensive reworking of the landscaping to accommodate a new driveway and entry to the home.  “The results are a seamless extension of the original house,” said Dreyfus, partner in Bushman Dreyfus Architects of Charlottesville. “We were able to get done exactly what we had envisioned.”

The Martin Horn team of Jeff Sims as project manager, and Michael Castorani as superintendent worked through some known site constraints. Navigation of a property line and a city sewer line presented some issues but Martin Horn’s expertise helped get them through these inconveniences without a hitch. “We really appreciated the follow up from the Martin Horn team. They were thoughtful and diligent about making sure we got what we wanted from this project.”
